This time, we'll use the lyrics to "Birthday, Birthday" (💿 [19]), which is featured in the Blue edition of DWE, and the content of the corresponding "BOOK 2" as a starting point to cultivate the seeds of learning English at home. 📝🌱

1 Introduction of the venue

This song, like the last one, is also about birthdays 🎂
This time, the scene depicts a birthday party where friends are invited and everyone is having a great time together 😸

As you can see, DWE materials include many items related to birthdays 🌸

also"It's my own problem","Feeling special"If there is such a thing,High-quality input encourages better output.I think so.

I encourage you all to approach learning English at home with an awareness of making it "personal" and "special" for yourselves! 🐱

There are other songs related to birthdays as well.
Birthday, Birthday
Let's have a birthday party!
Ten Little Candles
Flour, Sugar, Milk, and Butter
Happy Birthday to You
The Wishing Song
Five Little Candles Burnin
Birthday Cake Is Good
Birthday Gifts
There are many more, such as these 😊

(Quoted from DWE's "Sing Along!")

2 Learn grammar

🌸exclamatory sentence🌸

Example 1) Oh, what fun

🌸exclamatory sentence🌸

Example sentence 2) Join us and sing a little birthday song.

🌸Infinitive (adjective use "in order to")🌸

Example 3) Games to play.

(Quoted from DWE's "Sing Along!")

3 Column ~What is a piñata?~

Do you know what a "piñata" is?

A piñata is a kind of decorative ball shaped like a doll, commonly used in Mexico and other Central and South American countries. When broken open, it releases confetti, candy, and toys from inside. 🎊

Recently, it has started to be used in Japan for birthday parties and gender reveal parties.🌸

With their happy designs perfect for celebrations and their high level of fun for everyone, piñatas are rapidly gaining popularity in Japan! 🐱

As seen in the birthday scene in DWE, families practicing English at home would surely want to let their children experience a real piñata at least once. 😊

When children enjoy a piñata at a birthday party, they place a piñata shaped like their favorite character or toy in front of them, and the birthday child, blindfolded and holding a stick, tries to break it open like a watermelon!

We tried making a piñata at home too! 🎉

Yume helped break it open, and both Yume and the children who came to the party were very happy!

I was able to create some wonderful memories for them 🐱

You can buy piñatas on Amazon, so if you're interested, give it a try! 😊

4 About exclamatory sentences

The key point in this song, "Birthday, Birthday," is,exclamatory sentence"is.

Exclamatory sentences are a type of English grammar used to emphasize emotions such as excitement, surprise, joy, and sadness.

Exclamatory sentences can begin with "How" or "What," and both are translated as "How...!" or something similar, expressing the speaker's or writer's excitement.

A "!" (exclamation mark) is usually placed at the end of a sentence!

The key phrase for this song is as follows:

・What a wonderful house this is!
・How wonderful this house is!

(Quoted from DWE's "Sing Along!")

DWE materials use exclamatory sentences in various situations, so you'll encounter many related phrases!
To truly understand what it means to input information while linking phrases together, please try exploring it yourself! 🐱

【reference】
・What beautiful horses! (Book 9 page 45)
・What beautiful teeth! (Book 10 page 45)

Here's one important point to note!
Exclamatory sentences do not have negative forms..
Therefore, you cannot create an exclamation meaning, for example, "not beautiful"!

×How not beautiful this is!

The reason given is that "the emotions of 'awe' or 'surprise' that we want to express in exclamatory sentences come from accepting what is happening before us as it is." 🐱

5 Secrets of Practice

In the secrets of practice, Yume Mama, Besty instructors, and blog staff will share their practical methods for "home English"❣️

✅Use surprise and emotion to switch your feelings into English mode (Yume Mama)

When parents use English (exclamations, etc.) in surprising or moving moments, their children are more likely to naturally imitate them.

In our household, we felt that our child's English-speaking brain had been developed when exclamatory sentences started coming to them naturally.

Even now, when Yume is happy or surprised, the language that naturally comes out of her mouth is English, and this is because Yume has an English-speaking brain.

For example, recently, while shopping at the supermarket, even though we were speaking in Japanese, when Yume spotted a "giant pudding 🍮", she became very excited."What a giant pudding!" he exclaimed in English. And then, a barrage of English words came out (I couldn't understand what they were saying 💦).

I felt that the fact that English words spontaneously come out when emotions are stirred, even when I'm speaking in Japanese, is proof that I'm developing an English-speaking brain.

[How to incorporate exclamatory sentences into everyday conversation]
🌸 Looking at the toy → “What a big teddy bear!”
🌸 Look at the sky → “What a beautiful sky!”
🌸 Look at your child's drawing → “How colorful your picture is!”
🌸 After eating a delicious meal → “How delicious this soup is!”

When Mom also joins in and reacts in a fun way, the exclamatory sentences will come out more naturally! ✨

Gradually, as children move from simply repeating what they've memorized to substituting nouns they know into sentences, they'll start applying what they've learned and speaking English more and more. 🐱

Children naturally learn how to apply these concepts.
